Tuia Rangatahi Leadership Programme

Tuia is a Youth leadership programme designed to offer young Māori (18-25 years) the opportunity to build confidence and leadership skills, to connect with other champions from different communities throughout Aotearoa and experience unique opportunities. 

Council has been involved with this programme for over 10 years and is currently seeking expressions of interest for the 2023 programme.

Three pou make up the Tuia rangatahi experience:

Council appoints Chief Executive

Kawerau District Council is delighted to announce the appointment of Morgan Godfery as Chief Executive following a robust recruitment process as per the Local Government Act.

Mayor Faylene Tunui says that Mr Godfery brings a depth of public policy, communications and local understanding to the role that will serve the people of Kawerau well as we embrace and navigate the future opportunities.

Kawerau Water Supply Fluoridation Update

On 22 July 2022, Kawerau District Council received a directive from the Director General of Health, Dr Ashley Bloomfield, to fluoridate the drinking water of the Kawerau District.

The Director General of Health has under section 116E of the Health Act of 1956, the authority to do so, and failure to comply with the directive is an offence under section 116J.

Family-friendly Kawerau Christmas in the Park

The Radio 1XX Community Christmas concert (Afternoon show) will highlight local talent, directed by Pari Maxwell with a team of community volunteers, with MC Colin Magee (Radio 1XX).  While the evening show is directed by Pari Maxwell.  This will be a variety of top class artists and acts; aimed to entertain all age groups.

The artists will be announced on Monday 4 December.

Council advertises chief executive role 

With Russell George’s current term as Kawerau District Council Chief Executive officially ending on 31 October, the council is running a recruitment process to fill the role. 

Mayor Faylene Tunui says Mr George has served the council and community for 23 years – 18 as Chief Executive – and is able to reapply for this role.

Overall Council satisfaction results above New Zealand benchmarks 

Kawerau District Council has received a 70% overall satisfaction rating from residents in the latest triennial survey results. This is well above the New Zealand benchmark for Councils at 50%.

When keeping poultry in the Kawerau district there is a $25 cost to assess the property in the first instance, and then an ongoing cost of $25 per annum.
