Impounding of Wandering Stock – Mycoplasma Bovis & Public Safety

I don't want to wander so I hope our fencing is up to scratch!

How can the impounding of wandering stock in the Kawerau District affect your stock (cattle) if there was an outbreak in the District of Mycoplasma Bovis.

Council are often requested to attend wandering stock complaints on the Roads and/or Highways in the District.  If a situation occurs when stock need to be impounded, currently Council herd stock into the nearest paddock and attempt to make contact with the owner of the stock and land owner.

Because the Mycoplasma Bovis outbreak has now been reported in the North Island, there could be a chance that cattle in the District could become infected.  What Council doesn’t want is to impound or herd cattle into a paddock which in turn could infect other cattle.

Therefore Council is asking all cattle farms in the District to check all fences and be vigilant in all immediate repairs of all unsecure fences.

Council has reviewed and amended its working procedure.  If wandering stock was found on the roads in the District, as a public safety matter Council, will immediately telephone the Police for assistance and will attempt to only impound stock in an empty paddock with Police agreement or take instructions from the Police if this is not possible.

If you have any queries please do not hesitate to contact Council Office on 07 306 9009.
