Kawerau Freedom Camping site at Prideaux Park

Freedom Camping

Freedom Camping

Council encourages responsible freedom camping in the Kawerau District and has designated two reserves as freedom camping areas.

These designated areas are Prideaux Park and Firmin Field.

New Zealand law requires that all freedom camping must be in a self-contained vehicle or self-contained caravan.

Council’s welcoming stance toward freedom camping was recognised in 2010 when the District was awarded motorhome friendly status by the NZ Motorhomes Association.

Freedom Camping - Duration of Stay

The maximum stay for Freedom Camping in the District is a total of seven (7) consecutive nights in any one (1) calendar month.

Introduction of Infringement Notices / Fines for Freedom Camping Offences

Council has approved the introduction of an infringement regime from for Freedom Camping Offences under its Freedom Camping Bylaw 2019.

This introduction would provide a consistent approach to dealing with offences across the regulatory spectrum.  This would also allow Council an opportunity to improve community convenience and safety.
