Council advertises chief executive role

With Russell George’s current term as Kawerau District Council Chief Executive officially ending on 31 October, the council is running a recruitment process to fill the role.

Mayor Faylene Tunui says Mr George has served the council and community for 23 years – 18 as Chief Executive – and is able to reapply for this role.

“I want to celebrate everything that Russell has achieved for Kawerau over a number of terms as Chief Executive. It’s a tough but rewarding role that comes with significant responsibilities.

“Mr George’s knowledge of local government themes, trends and risks has been invaluable in guiding and advising elected members – particularly in recent times as the local government environment has faced change and uncertainty.

“His financial management and stewardship of our Council has been a real area of strength. Our community is and has been in a strong position to fund its infrastructure needs – not because of the decisions made today, but because of the careful, prudent management of finances over time.

“Russell is respectful, knowledgeable and considerate to both his staff and councillors, with a principled commitment to hear, understand and resolve as opposed to reacting to situations. The breadth and depth of local government is not well known or understood, and Russell always makes himself available to guide and advise councillors while respecting the governance space and role.

“To make sure the recruitment process is robust and fair, we’ve appointed an independent specialist recruitment consultant.

“We are committed to making the best possible appointment to lead our council and community into the future.”

The council expects to make an appointment late this year.
