Citizenship Ceremonies

Participation in a public ceremony is an important step in the process of becoming a New Zealand citizen.  It is a chance for people to publicly declare their allegiance to New Zealand and for the Kawerau community to welcome them on behalf of all New Zealanders.

Successful applicants for the New Zealand citizenship must attend a public citizenship ceremony at the council. At the ceremony, applicants stand before the Mayor and take the oath or affirmation of allegiance, declaring that they will honour HM King Charles III, obey New Zealand laws and be a good citizen.

Only after swearing allegiance and receiving a certificate personally from the mayor does a person becomes a New Zealand citizen, even with prior approval from the Department of Internal Affairs as to their suitability.
