Kawerau District Council Representation Review

As required by the Local Electoral Act 2001, Kawerau District Council has reviewed its representation arrangements following a submission and hearing process it has now adopted its representation arrangements for the 2022 elections.

The review confirmed that the number of Councillors representing Kawerau will remain at eight (8) plus the Mayor; and there will be no community boards or communities.

As part of the deliberation process, Council resolved to engage with the community regarding future representation arrangements, specifically Māori representation. This will occur for the 2025 local government elections.

Basis of Election for the 2022 Local Elections

In accordance with the Local Electoral Act 2001, the Kawerau District Council has conducted a review of its representation arrangements for the local elections to be held in 2022.
As part of the review, Council considered the communities of interest in the District and how to provide fair and effective representation both for those communities of interest and for individuals in the District.

Following these considerations, Council made an initial and then a final representation proposal that reflects current arrangements. The final proposal is that:

(i) Councillors be elected by electors of the District as a whole (comprising the area in SO Plan 57977) and that the District not be divided into wards;

(ii) the number of Councillors to be elected be 8, plus the Mayor;

(iii) there be no communities or community boards

Those that lodged a submission to the initial representation proposal were then invited to make an appeal to the final representation proposal. The appeal period closed at 4.00pm on 10 November 2021 and no appeals were received.

Under the Local Electoral Act 2001, this means that the final representation proposal becomes the basis of election for the local elections to be held in October 2022.

Please contact the District Office in Ranfurly Court, Kawerau, if you would like further information about the representation review.
