Tony Gardner Joins Kawerau Pathways to Work

Tony GardnerTHE next phase of implementation is underway for Industrial Symbiosis Kawerau or ISK’s Kawerau Pathways to Work (KPtW) project, which aims to grow the workforce in Kawerau to meet current and future needs of industry.

KPtW management group chair Deanne Butler announced that Tony Gardner has been employed as the Kawerau Pathways to Work Co-ordinator starting on Monday, September 23.
“We are pleased to advise that Tony will become our Kawerau Pathways to Work Co-ordinator who will work closely with employers, cadets and apprentices to make sure we are doing the very best for all those involved in this initiative.”

The Kawerau Pathways to Work project has already had eight employers confirm they are keen to take on cadets on a three-month basis. There are currently eleven positions for cadets on offer.

Deanne said the Kawerau Pathways to Work team had already begun interviewing potential candidates for the three-month paid cadetships that target youth aged between 17 and 25.
Deanne said, “While industry training was already available in New Zealand, the unique factor about KPtW was that the programme was completely industry-led in Kawerau.”

“We are thankful for the support of employers who have been working in partnership with us to develop this unique programme and also to the Provincial Growth Fund (PGF) which will provide funding over the next two years to support these initiatives.”

Another key party is Industrial Symbiosis Kawerau or ISK, formed 10 years ago with support by the Kawerau District Council. ISK is a collaboration of like-minded parties working together for mutual gain to provide a network for businesses in Kawerau and to remove the impediments for business success in the district and the Eastern Bay region.

The Kawerau Pathways to Work programme evolved from this network to grow the workforce capability of Kawerau youth and the under-employed.
