Council acknowledges Trust Horizon support

Kawerau District Council wishes to acknowledge the contribution by Trust Horizon to the community.

Trust Horizon has pledged more than $200,000 to support projects that will benefit the Kawerau community, including funds towards the drilling of a new geothermal borehole to heat the Maurie Kjar Memorial Swimming Pool Complex and the electrical rewiring required for the splash pad at the complex. 

Mayor Malcolm Campbell acknowledged this would make a huge difference to the Kawerau community. 

“The pools are such a well-loved and used complex by so many people of all ages within the community. In addition, it is a popular location for sports teams and groups who often travel to Kawerau.”

Mayor Campbell would like to acknowledge Trust Horizon Trustee Edwina O’Brien for her support of the district.”

Kawerau District Council Chief Executive Russell George said the support from Trust Horizon to the projects has a huge positive impact on the community.

“To have received just over $200,000 in funding from Trust Horizon for a variety of projects is a fantastic endorsement for our community.” 

Particularly, the new geothermal borehole that will heat the Maurie Kjar Memorial Swimming Pool Complex which Trust Horizon are funding to the value of $66,247 (excluding GST).

“This has an ongoing positive impact for the community and Council – as geothermal steam is by far the most economic method to heat the complex. This support has an immediate impact allowing us to drill the new borehole and tap into a new steam well and has an ongoing cost saving for ratepayers.”

The Maurie Kjar Memorial Swimming Pool Complex is such a popular facility and ‘jewel in the crown’ for the Kawerau district. 

The splash pad provides an activity for younger tamariki and the Trust Horizon funding of $24,884 plus GST for this will ensure is it back in action for summer. 

“Trust Horizon’s contribution also ensures that we can continue to provide this facility free of charge to our residents which is a priority.” 

The complex is well utilised by Kawerau residents and popular with many in the Eastern Bay and even further afield across the Bay region. 

Trust Horizon has pledged further support to assist with the electrical component of current upgrade of the pool entrance to the value of $62,990.60. This building work is already underway, as part of stage two of the pool development. Stage one saw the new clubrooms completed for the swimming club, utilising the former changing rooms. 

In addition, Trust Horizon is offering support of $42,572.49 excluding GST towards the main power supply upgrade at the new Animal Shelter and Re-homing Facility.

The project is also on the drawing board ready to go and the tender has been advertised for the animal rehoming shelter.
