Media Release - 3 June 2021 New Pedestrian Crossing planned for Tarawera High School

Pedestrian Crossing Planned by Tarawera High School

Council is advising residents that a pedestrian crossing will soon be installed on River Road beside Tarawera High School.

The crossing is the result of consultation with the school principal and Board of Trustees along with neighbouring residents.

The pedestrian crossing is being installed at 77 River Road after various discussions with the school Board of Trustees and Principal about the best place to site it for the safety of students crossing over to the school.

For now, this crossing will be a trial with painted lines across the road, and include a pram crossing on either side of the road (similar to driveways). This will enable easier access for people with prams and in wheelchairs.

Please note at this stage only signage is installed and the white 'zebra crossing’ lines will be painted on the road surface after Queen's Birthday weekend.

Already Kawerau District Council has received positive feedback on its social media channels after announcing the crossing is coming.

Comments so far indicate the support for a pedestrian crossing and we look forward to it being installed.

As it is a trial, Council will be taking note of all aspects of placement, although there has been careful consideration of the siting by both Council and Tarawera High School.

Motorists are urged to proceed with caution during the installation and in the weeks following as both they and pedestrians become used to the new crossing.
