Cyclone Gabrielle

Date: Tuesday, Feburary 14 2023, 12.15pm

ON behalf of the Kawerau District Council, Kawerau Mayor Faylene Tunui acknowledges the impact of Cyclone Gabrielle on our neighbours' Whakatāne and Ōpōtiki overnight.

"We wish to send our sincere regards to everyone in our neighbouring regions whom felt the full force of Cyclone Gabrielle last night. We wish them well in the clean-up effort and will be offering our assistance and support."

Fortunately, Kawerau rohe only sustained minor damage to trees and our Council staff and contractors are out there cleaning up now.

We wish to encourage our Kawerau community to stay home and off the roads unless absolutely necessary, given the many slips blocking the State Highways overnight.

Residents who wish to report any issues, are encouraged to phone our Council Duty Supervisor 24/7 with regards to trees, water and emergency issues on 07 306 9009.

Other non-urgent issues can be reported via the Council website Fix It and Report a Problem | Kawerau District Council (kaweraudc.govt.nz) or via our Customer Services team on 07 306 9009 or in person at the Council Offices in Ranfurly Court, Kawerau.

We know Cyclone Gabrielle is heading our way and we can see some of the impacts with our Northland, Auckland and Coromandel whānau.

We are keeping a close eye on the weather and have Council staff checking rivers, culverts and areas that may be prone to flooding, and also at risk trees.

At home and at work, you can also be prepared, have a plan and pack a grab bag (medicines, clothing and blanket, torches, snacks and water, baby supplies and/or pet food (if needed))  if you live in a low-lying coastal area or somewhere that frequently floods.

  • Avoid non-urgent travel.
  • Prepare for possible power outages.
  • Keep your mobile phone handy (and keep it fully charged).

We’ll continue sharing the latest news and updates here, and on our Facebook page. You can also listen to local radio, particularly Radio 1XX and Radio 1XX Facebook page who are sharing all the latest.
