Kawerau Community Update

24 March 2020

The COVID-19 situation has become extremely serious.

Yesterday, the government has advised that the situation had moved up to COVID-19 Level 3 Alert. It will be moved to Level 4 at 11.59pm Wednesday 25 March 2020.

The reason behind this is due to the disease has likely not been contained and there are risks of widespread outbreaks.

At COVID-19 Level 4 Alert (as per the government's directive):–

  • People are instructed to stay at home
  • Educational facilities are closed
  • Businesses closed except essential services (e.g. supermarkets, pharmacies, clinics) and lifeline utilities
  • Rationing of provisions and supplies
  • Travel severely limited
  • Major reprioritisation of healthcare services.

The Council has today officially set up an Emergency Committee that comprises Mayor Malcolm Campbell, Deputy Mayor Faylene Tunui and Councilor Carolyn Ion.

This committee will be able to make decisions for Council during the period of the COVID-19 event.

The Council will continue to provide essential services.

These may be in an altered form.

Please be patient and kind to each other people.

A Question and Answer sheet is being developed and will be posted online soon and will be updated regularly.

Please note – we will be posting an update shortly on behalf of Kawerau New World.

If you require information please phone the Council offices on 07 306 9009.

REMINDER: The Council offices are now closed to the public.
