Civil Defence Emergency Mobile Alert System

Civil Defence Emergency Mobile Alert System

TEXT alerts were sent out using the Civil Defence Emergency mobile alert system to alert Kawerau residents of the Boil Water Notice - and again last night to advise it had been lifted.
There are three Civil Defence Emergency Mobile Alert Systems:

  1. Emergency Mobile Alerts  These are automatically sent and about 70% of new or smart mobile phones are capable of receiving them. Even if phones are off, this message will activate the phone.
  2. Red Cross Hazards App  People with new or smart mobile phones can download the app to receive this. If you subscribe to the Red Cross Hazards App (which is free) it doesn't matter where you are - you will receive notifications for the area you have signed up to. People can unsubscribe.
  3. Text Alerting  People with older phones not capable of receiving Emergency Mobile Alerts or downloading the Red Cross Hazard App can subscribe to this alert (and unsubscribe). Your initial subscription txt message costs 20 cents – but all alerts you receive are free.
To sign up to this system to receive alerts for Kawerau simply text KA (no spaces) to 2028.
NOTE: KA is the code for Kawerau
People can un-subscribe by ringing the BOP Refional Council and asking for the Emergency Management Text Alerting staff, who can then remove their cellphone number from the list.
