Friends of Stoneham Walk Seek Helpers

A GROUP of Kawerau residents who enjoy gardens and love Stoneham Walk have started a group to support the redevelopment of the area.

The idea is to collaborate and support the Kawerau District Council with ideas, planning and hands-on work in the area.

Kawerau District Council Amenities and Gardens team leader Robyn Wilson said it was a great initiative.

“We are proud of the gardens and green spaces in our Kawerau district – they have drawn positive attention from within and outside the area and we’ve received excellent feedback recently from the renowned Hamilton Gardens Manager.”

“We are a small team with four gardeners for the district and we know that together with this group we can really add to the beauty of Stoneham Walk.”

The Friends of Stoneham Walk group is looking to help Council’s gardening team by:

  • Sharing ideas for garden layout and planting schemes
  • Growing on baby trees such as rhododendrons for later planting out
  • Hands-on help with planting, weed control and pruning
  • Fundraising for specimen trees and garden furniture

With about five members, the Friends of Stoneham Walk group is looking for more residents to get involved.

“We are looking for people with ideas as well,” said group co-ordinator Sheryll Marshall.

Mrs Marshall moved to Kawerau almost three years ago.  An avid gardener and former garden centre owner Mrs Marshall encourages people to come forward and get involved.

“It’s a lovely area for the community to enjoy and we trust that the group’s help will support the Council’s work and benefit the area.”

The Kawerau Council gardens team will also be working in Stoneham Walk with some 1,300 natives to be planted in stage one in the coming months.

Ms Wilson said there was all sorts of possibilities for the area including an arboretum in the area that would include unique trees for the community to enjoy.

If you enjoy gardens and gardening, have a bit of spare time and would like to help keep Stoneham Walk beautiful please contact Sheryll Marshall by phone on

STREAM WORK: Volunteers from the Friends of Stoneham Walk group cleared out the spring-fed stream from Kirk Crescent that feeds theRuruanga Stream in Stoneham Walk recently.

This work was in advance of the project with the Ruruanga Stream that runs through Stoneham Walk which is having the stream banks armoured with rocks in areas that have been washed out to prevent further erosion.

In addition, the Bell Street face in Stoneham Walk is being prepared using a long-reach excavator to clear scrub in preparation for revegetation planting in May and June 2020.
