KAWERAU District Council encourages stakeholders, residents and the business and industrial sector to make their submissions to the Long Term Plan 2021-2031.

Submissions formally close at 5:00pm on Monday, 14 June 2021.

Kawerau Mayor Malcolm Campbell said, “Our focus during recent weeks has been engaging with the community about the Long Term Plan 2021-2031 and the consultation topics.”

Council continues to support economic development 

Council formally received the news yesterday regarding the closure of the Norske Skog Tasman Mill.

Kawerau District Council chief executive Russell George said, "It is an end of an era for the district and we acknowledge the huge contribution the company has made to the district, region and also nationally over the years." 

Norske Skog is Council’s largest ratepayer and the impacts of the closure of the company on the district are being analysed by Council.

Pedestrian Crossing Planned by Tarawera High School

Council is advising residents that a pedestrian crossing will soon be installed on River Road beside Tarawera High School. 

The crossing is the result of consultation with the school principal and Board of Trustees along with neighbouring residents. 

The pedestrian crossing is being installed at 77 River Road after various discussions with the school Board of Trustees and Principal about the best place to site it for the safety of students crossing over to the school.

Kawerau District Council continues the conversation about the Long Term Plan 2021-2031 

Starting a conversation and having a discussion has been the focus of consultation meetings between Kawerau District Council and stakeholders. In the lead-up to the submission period opening on 14 May, Kawerau Councillors, the chief executive and leadership team began meeting with Iwi and Tangata Whenua and stakeholders.

Work is progressing well on the roundabout being constructed on State Highway 34 by the Pūtauaki Trust.

Pūtauaki Trust General Manager John O’Brien recently presented to elected members and management at a Kawerau District Council workshop.

Now in stage two, the Pūtauaki Trust industrial development includes a roundabout and link roadway connecting to an existing internal access road within the Pūtauaki Trust Industrial area.

NOTICE - Road closure from Monday, 19 October 2020 

The downstream culvert at Cobham Drive will be worked on first which means that River Road will be closed from 262 and 264 River Road from Monday, 19 October.

Bus students who live around the Cobham Drive and Ward Street area in Kawerau will either need to make their way to the River Road Dairy or Kawerau Life Konnect (the former Kawerau Intermediate School) during the first of the two closures for pickup. The school bus pickup times remain unchanged.
