Rubbish and Recycling

Usual Rubbish and Recycling Collection Services

The Council runs a weekly kerbside rubbish and recycling collection and a fortnightly green waste collection service in the District.

Each year, if a collection would take place on Christmas Day and New Year's Day, those collection days will each be shifted to a nearby date and the change will be published here.

The standard bins are 60 litre for residual waste and 240 litre for greenwaste, with a 60 litre crate for recyclables.

  • The 60 litre bin for residual waste can be upgraded to a 120 litre bin for a one-time charge in the year that you make the change, and in subsequent years, this additional charge is incorporated into the rates for the property.
  • Lost, stolen and damaged bins, and recycling crates, can be replaced for a small charge.
  • Please refer to the "Residual Refuse Bin Charges" section of the Kawerau Fees and Charges document for the current charges.

In March 2023, the Government announced that, for the first time, there would be consistent recycling across the country. They set out precisely what can and cannot be recycled in your kerbside bins, so we will have the same recycling rules everywhere in New Zealand.

Place your 60 litre rubbish bin and recycling crate out together every week, and on alternate weeks for your greenwaste.

For recycling to work, everyone must get involved. See the recycling section for information on how you can help, when collection days are and how you can reduce your waste.

Kawerau District prides itself as clean and green. To help keep with this image, there are a number of ways that we can help protect our environment. Find out what you can do to reduce waste.

Why not save your greenwaste and make compost for your garden?

The large 240 litre greenwaste bin is collected fortnightly on the same day as your residual waste and on alternate weeks to your recycling.

New Zealand families waste about $560 each year on food which is thrown uneaten into the rubbish bin. This adds up to a staggering $872 million for the whole country. The Love Food Hate Waste NZ campaign aims to turn this around by inspiring and enabling people to waste less food.
