Swarm of earthquakes unsettle Kawerau rohe

 The swarm of earthquakes in the region has been felt strongly in Kawerau from the early hours of the morning.

Kawerau District Mayor Faylene Tunui said “Residents are reporting that they have been awoken in the early hours of the morning due to the shakes.”

“Our first concern is of course the safety of our people and community. Having  a plan is important for each household. In the first instance drop, cover and hold to avoid injury.”

The Kawerau District Council are inviting expressions of interest from members of our Kawerau Community to grow participation, creation and exhibition of the art forms in Kawerau, as members of the Creative New Zealand Community Arts Scheme Committee.

Due to persistent rain during the summer, the water table has risen in the District causing localised flooding in some aras. The area around Hilldale Reserve in Hardie Avenue is experiencing low-level flooding causing damage to the berms and the road surface.

Tuia Rangatahi Leadership Programme

Tuia is a Youth leadership programme designed to offer young Māori (18-25 years) the opportunity to build confidence and leadership skills, to connect with other champions from different communities throughout Aotearoa and experience unique opportunities. 

Council has been involved with this programme for over 10 years and is currently seeking expressions of interest for the 2023 programme.

Manatū Hauora (Ministry of Health) directs Kawerau to fluoridate drinking water

KAWERAU District Council confirms it has received a Manatū Hauora (Ministry of Health) directive to fluoridate the drinking water supply.

On Wednesday July 27, Council received a formal letter from the Director General of Health Dr Ashley Bloomfield instructing that fluoridation of the district’ would be required from 31 January 2023.
