Footpaths and Roads
There are 40kms of sealed road in Kawerau - and one kilometre of unsealed road. All roads are resealed every 15 years. Gutters are swept about three times a year and Council spends $25,000 a year to replace approximately 500 metres of kerbing.
Footpaths
Kawerau has 80 kms of concrete footpaths and has an annual programme to replace damaged footpaths, particularly where tree roots have lifted the lips. If you have a concern about footpaths, please contact the Council.
Street Lights
There are more than 700 street lights in the town. While inspections are undertaken regularly, if you see one that isn't working, please contact the Council and it will be attended to within a week. Improvement to the lighting system, such as more lights, stronger lights and better lighting at intersections, is part of Council's improvement programme each year. Council spends approximately $25,000 each year on this. There is also a programme where power lines are being put underground in some streets.
Street Signs
Street signs are replaced when they are damaged. If you see a damaged sign, please contact the Council. Local signs, such as those directing people to club rooms etc, need Council approval. The cost of these signs is the responsibility of the club or organisation, but if a sign is damaged, Council will pay for its replacement.
Vehicle Crossing
Vehicle crossings or entrance ways to properties are the responsibility of property owners.
Storm water
Council has a network of underground pipes which dispose of surface water from the roads. At times of heavy rain there may be some minor flooding because grates block up with leaves or other debris. Usually the flooding is short-lived and any blockages are cleared as soon as possible. If you notice flooding please report it to the Council.
