Young Achiever Awards
The Young Achiever Awards were introduced by Councillor Maureen Laugesen during her term to recognise the high level of achievement by many of the students within the Kawerau District.
Nominations for awards are called for each year in August for students who in the previous 12 months have attained regional, national or international recognition in their sporting or academic achievements or have won an event while representing the Bay of Plenty.
A sub-committee considers each nomination and, based on the criteria, either approves or declines the application. All successful candidates are invited to a public ceremony hosted by the Mayor either at the Kawerau College or the Kawerau Intermediate School, where each student is presented with a certificate noting his/her achievements.
Usually about 50-100 students qualify for an award each year. Parents, grandparents and teachers are also invited to attend. The host school provides a guest speaker and entertainment as part of the ceremony followed by afternoon tea.
