The Kawerau Information Centre is located centrally in the Bus Terminal on Plunket Street (turn right at the Gull service station when coming into town). It is operated by Manager Caroline Pearson along with her Customer Services Officers.
You will be welcomed by their inviting smiles. They will endeavour to answer your queries on travel, bookings, activities and services in and around Kawerau.
It is open daily from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm during the year. During the peak of summer each year, from early December to late January, there are extended opening hours, from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm, except for Christmas Day when it is closed all day.
Forestry permits to drive through the Tarawera Forest to visit the Falls and Tarawera River Outlet on the shores of Lake Tarawera, general information about New Zealand, as well as information on local attractions and accommodation are all available from the Information Centre.

On Wednesday morning and afternoon, we broadcast live on Radio 1XX in Whakatane about community notices and any upcoming events to be held in Kawerau. If you have a notice you would like us to broadcast, please feel free to ring us or drop your notice into the Information Centre.
Tarawera Falls / Outlet / Campsite
Vehicle access to the Tarawera Falls and Outlet / Campsite is along private forest roads, and permits are required to gain access into these sites, at a cost of $5.00 per vehicle. The Information Centre will provide you with a permit, a map, and directions in and out of the forest. There are restrictions on entering the Tarawera Forest at certain times of the year, and certain types of vehicles are prohibited from using the forestry roads. Therefore it is strongly recommended that anyone planning to travel to Kawerau to visit the Outlet, Campsite, or Falls, first contacts the Infornmation Centre as above to check if the requirements will affect their plans.
The DOC Camp is situated at the Tarawera Outlet and the cost to stay is $7.00 per adult per night, children 5-17 years old $2.00, under 5's are free. This quiet, back to nature retreat is a must-see for all families who want to get away from the hustle and bustle of a busy life, especially during the hot summer months and the holiday periods.
