Proposed Boundary ReorganisationA Joint Committee of the Kawerau and Whakatane District Councils has developed a draft reorganisation scheme which proposes a boundary alteration.
The purpose of the proposed boundary alteration is to extend the area of land available to the Kawerau industrial hub. The proposed alteration relates to an area of approximately 80 hectares along State Highway 34 straddling the north-eastern boundary between the Districts. The alteration would exclude the land from the Rangitaiki Ward of the Whakatane District and include it in the Kawerau District.
Representatives of the Joint Committee will be at Tarawera Mall, Kawerau, from 10.00 a.m. to 12.30 p.m. Thursday 12 August to discuss and answer queries about the proposed boundary alteration. Submissions are invited by 20 September 2010.
Copies of the draft scheme are available below, or from the Kawerau District Council District Office in Ranfurly Court, Kawerau, phone 07 306 9009. Enquiries should be directed to Chris Jensen, Manager of Regulatory and Planning at Kawerau District Council.

Resource management is governed by the Resource Management Act 1991 (RMA). The purpose of the RMA is to promote the sustainable management of natural and physical resources, as defined in the Act.
Council is required to prepare a District Plan under the RMA. The District Plan is the main document that manages land use and development within the Kawerau District.
Its purpose is to assist Council to carry out its functions in order to achieve the purpose of the RMA.
The District Plan controls building development and other land use activities and subdivision. If you intend to undertake building work or land use activities or subdivision, the District Plan contains rules that may affect your proposal. In some cases, you may need to obtain a resource consent before you proceed.
The District Plan addresses such matters as:
- Control of effects of the use, development, or protection of land through zoning provisions and other rules
- Standards for the erection of buildings (height, yards, coverage etc)
- Natural hazards
- Storage and use of hazardous substances
- Noise
- Heritage protection
Council also has environmental monitoring responsibilities and must take account of regional and national policy statements in preparing and administering the District Plan.
