In the middle of the last century, the Whakatane Bird Club was amalgamated with the Poultry and Pigeon Club. In the early 1950's the Whakatane Cage Bird Club was formed as a separate club. The club began holding shows in various halls around the town. In 2003 the club changed its name again to the current name of Whakatane Bird Club.
In 2008, the Club held its 54th Annual Show in the Kawerau Town Hall on the 3rd and 4th May. The weekend was an outstanding success. Around 600 visitors viewed the 550 birds entered from as far a field as Auckland, Waikanae, Napier, Hastings, Gisborne, Te Aroha, Morrinsville, Hamilton, Ngaruawahia, Rotorua, Tauranga as well as loc al members from the Eastern Bay of Plenty. Birds were entered in classes according to the variety of bird, and judged on such things as size, proportion, feather type and quality, colour, song and health.
Birds catered for include Canaries: Yorkshire, Norwich, Border, Colour Fed and Non Colour Fed, Gloster, Lizard and Roller. Budgerigars, Bengalese & Zebra Finches. British birds which include Goldfinches, Chaffinches, Thrushes, Blackbirds and Sparrows. Lovebirds and a foreign section which includes exotic Finches, Parakeets, Doves, Quail and Parrots.
Exhibitors won diplomas, certificates, rosettes, ribbons, medals and cash prizes. To see the list of Category Winners click Show Report.
