Technology

The Kawerau Library has the following technology available to support learning, literacy, recreation and knowledge.

Photocopier

A self-help photocopier is available for use in the Technology Zone of the Library. It photocopies A4 and A3 at 20c a single side page.

Playstation

A Playstation is located in the Chill Zone of the Library for children and teenagers. Staff change the game weekly.

Internet And Computers

As part of the Aotearoa People's Network, there are 4 free PCs available for community use. Internet features and Office facilities are able to be accessed on these machines. There is also one Council PC available for Library Members only to use in the Technology Zone of the Library. These computers offer access to the internet, word processing and the Library's catalogue and electronic databases. There is another PC available for public use with access to the Library's catalogue. Customers need to show their current membership card to staff before accessing this machine. After 15 minutes, members must move on if there are others waiting to use the PCs. There is no booking system and printing can be done at 20c a single side page. Users must follow the computer use policy below:

Computer Use Policy

Internet is available in the Kawerau Library for public use. The Kawerau Library endorses the principle of intellectual freedom. It does not condone, condemn or endorse opinions and views expressed in material on the internet. Some material available on the internet breaches the law, or encourages such, and is not acceptable for access at a public Internet site. Staff will shut down any programme that accesses such material. Unacceptable material falls into the following areas:

  • Promotion of racial hatred
  • Violence against others, especially woman and children
  • Sexual activities relating to underage people
  • Pornography
  • Activities which lead to illegal activities in New Zealand eg illegal drug use

All users of the Internet service agree not to send nor access any material across the Internet by any means which is threatening, libellous, obscene, harassing or offensive, or infringes third party intellectual property rights arising therefrom or any crime facilitated thereby. The Kawerau Library neither endorses the contents of any user's communications nor assumes responsibility for any threatening, libellous, obscene, harassing or offensive material, any infringement of third party intellectual property rights arising therefrom, or any crime facilitated thereby.

Training in the use of Internet is not offered by the Library. Downloading to the hard drive or a disk is not available. Printing can be done. Staff will not accept or send e-mail on behalf of customers. Any person who consistently breaks this policy can be denied access to use this service at the District Librarian's discretion.
