Erica's Excited

about Dawn’s Prelude by Tracie Peterson. After being married off by her father, in a business deal, at the tender age of sixteen to a hard-hearted man, Lydia lives the next fourteen years of her life in a living hell. But when her husband and father are killed in an accident she finds herself suddenly free. But at the same time as her freedom arrives, hot on its heels, is the fear for her life because of her step-children after her husband’s will is read. So Lydia flees to safety in Alaska. But how long will her safety last? I found this to be an exciting read. Right from the beginning it captures your attention and keeps it right to the last word. Located in Large Print (Pet).

Lawren Likes

The Rose That Grew From Concrete by Tupac Shakur. The connotations that spring to mind when one mentions the name Tupac are mostly associated with gang violence. I am a huge fan of both his music and his poetry and I have to say that for a long time I assumed him to be some ghetto child with no depth to his soul who craves more attention than he deserved. I first read this book when I was a young teenager trying to understand the man who sings of rape, murder and hate for his brethren simply because of the gang they affiliated with. It was because of this book that I grew an affinity for him. His songs don’t do him much justice but his poetry opens many doors for one to begin to identify with. There is so much truth and honesty in this book that one can’t help but feel ripped off that he was taken from this world at such a young age when he had so much more to offer. Definitely one for our youth to be inspired by even if Tupac’s legacy isn’t a good one, he more than compensates for it with this book. Located in Non-fiction (811.54).

Ramona Raves

about Band Of Gold by Deborah Challinor. This enthralling historical read is the follow-up to Kitty and Amber. This time Kitty Farrell’s heart is left in tatters when her beloved husband Rian goes missing. In her grief she turns to her husband’s ship-mate Daniel who has loved her from afar for many years. A good mix of romance with historical action set around gold mining at Ballarat. Located in Historical (Cha).

Rowena Recommends

A Long Way From Heaven by Sheelagh Kelly. This is an oldie but a goodie! It is the first of the Feeny Family series of books and it is a great read. The year is 1846, following the family as they leave Ireland to make a new life for themselves in York. Patrick and his pregnant wife Mary finally make their destination only to be told that they are only allowed to settle in the slum area of the city, Walmgate. There they meet a host of characters who help them to adapt to their surroundings, but the death of Patrick’s wife changes everything. Located in Historical (Kel).

Susan Selects

Queen Victoria: Demon Hunter by A.E. Moorat for an entertaining goth horror read. Mixing real history with the idea that demons are trying to control 19th Century Europe and exploiting the new reign of a young female Queen to do so, makes for a fun and fascinating story. I enjoyed how the author took real relationships like Queen Victoria and John Brown and explains it all with a supernatural twist. Don’t take too seriously but great reading if you like zombies and politicians. Located in Fiction (Moo).
