Who is K-OPER-8?

K-OPER-8 is an action group established in Kawerau because of a need for agencies to work more closely together. The purpose of building closer relationships is to make services and information more accessible to people in Kawerau who are in need of help.

K-OPER-8 has taken a proactive leadership role by initiating projects that will have wider, positive impacts on the whole community.

The group is lead by Mayor Malcolm Campbell, with representation from the key government agencies that provide services in Kawerau. There are also community representatives involved, who help work towards a safe and healthy Kawerau community.

How K-OPER-8 helps our community

The work done by K-OPER-8 is focussed on “what is good for Kawerau”, and acknowledges that local leadership is needed for local solutions.

K-OPER-8 goals are “do-able”: small and achievable. For example, agencies working together with individuals and their families one by one, can contribute to outcomes at a community level.

K-OPER-8 goals are also realistic, and a regular check is done to make sure that K-OPER-8 is the right place for this work to be.

Potential work is identified through feedback from social service community workers, organisations, groups and individuals who deal with the real issues faced in the community. All work undertaken is agreed by K-OPER-8 members and contributes to the overall goal of working towards A Safe and Healthy Community.

The work doesn’t have to be a new project or task. Sometimes the group will support existing work being done in the community. Sometimes better co-ordination is all that is needed for a community or government initiative to get great results.

Examples of the work done so far:

o A community liaison/ambassador to improve safety and security in the CBD

o Support of the Whanau Extravaganza Day

o Support of one-stop health information service at Heartlands

o Help with the Community Food Bank drive

o Support with the establishment of the Kawerau Youth Council

o Recognition of individual and group contribution to the community through Mayoral Awards

How does K-OPER-8 work?

The group meets on the second Tuesday of each month, in Council Chambers. Meetings are chaired by Mayor Campbell, and facilitated by Carol Buckley.

The main focus of these meetings is to update the Action Plan. This is to make sure that progress is made every month, and that K-OPER-8 members are accountable to each other for what they have committed to do.

When goals are achieved they become “WINS”, and are recorded in a separate file. This is a good way of tracking what has actually been done, especially when it feels like progress is too slow!
