Youth Matters

Approximately 40% of Kawerau’s residents are under the age of 24 and Council wants to make sure that young people have a chance to participate in their community. Council adopted its Youth Policy  on 30 October 2007. The Policy includes the Council's vision for its youth and the objectives needed for putting this vision into action.   A copy of the Strategic and Tactical initiatives for 2010/2011 can be downloaded by clicking Kawerau Distict Council Youth Strategy .

The Kawerau Youth Council was established in 2008 to give young people the opportunity to become involved and have their say. The Kawerau Youth Council’s Vision Statement is

Kawerau is where young people are optimistic, supported and encouraged to take up challenges to contribute to a growing, vibrant community.

The KYC are very active in either organising or supporting events and activities aimed at youth.
