Kawerau Woodfest

Kawerau Woodfest is almost upon us with what is lining up to be the largest Woodfest to date.  Check out this year's attractions.

Entries into the Woodskills Competition have been flowing in and this year around 150 or more items have been entered into 11 categories, with woodturning being the most popular.

There will be the brand new woodchip shoveling competition, 'The Diddy Dig', appearing on Saturday 3rd September at Woodfest.  This will see teams of 4 kids from local primary schools, battle it out to be the fastest to shovel half a cubic metre of woochip into specially made bins.

There will be plenty of attractions for all ages and the not to be missed Kiwi Lumberjack Show will be sure to please the crowds.  All of the outdoor attractions are totally free for all spectators.

With the National Woodskills Competition as its cornerstone, Kawerau Woodfest is establishing itself as the premier event in New Zealand to encompass a wide variety of elements associated with the wood industry and the bush at large. Click Background for further information on the history of the festival.

The town of Kawerau will become alive with the smell of two stroke, pinus radiatus and timber oil as the nations finest wood craft artists and competitive forestry workers come together to entertain the visiting public and wider community of the Bay of Plenty. This year promises to be jam packed full of entertainment and with the Rugby World Cup coinciding with Woodfest, crowd numbers are anticipated to be the biggest ever.

The attractions for 2011 include the The National Woodskills Competition which will be celebrating 21 years in 2011, other attractions include the big crowd pleasers with the Chainsaw Racing, Chainsaw Carving, The Big Dig, Wood Choppers and many other sideshows and attractions on Prideaux Park. There will also be the addition of some new and exciting attractions with the Ramsey Roundwood Lumberjacks being a must see and will be ab excellent addition to the existing entertainment for all the family to enjoy. Kawerau has a fine history as a mill town and a popular attraction is the guided tours on offer of the local industrial sights.

There will be plenty of craft stalls in the town centre and anybody wishing to hold a stall can get information here.

The REAL New Zealand Festival is a nationwide celebration of all the things we love most about New Zealand, with events and experiences throughout the country. Kawerau Woodfest is one of the featured NZ festivals coinciding with the 2011 Rugby World Cup.

Kawerau Woodfest in the Bay of Plenty is an A&P show for wood — a showcase of the artistic side of working with wood along with a host of other activities associated with the wood industry.

The cornerstone of Kawerau Woodfest is the National Woodskills Competition— a huge crowd-puller for over 20 years. With events such as the wood chopping competition, you'll be transported back to an era when the axe was king.

The sweet sound of a dozen or so axemen wielding axe to wood is unforgettable, as is the sight of these quintessential black singlet-wearing Kiwi's sweating it out with unswerving skill, strength, grit and passion. Chainsaw racing and The Big Dig chip shovelling competition are a further display of brawn and aerobic fitness, while chainsaw carving is a demonstration of unbelievable deftness.

Alongside these events is the artistic (and quieter) side of working with wood, with competition events covering a broad spectrum of wood craftsmanship and wood art including carving, sculpture, woodturning, furniture, marquetry and intarsia, toys, models and games and wearable wood.

Kawerau Woodfest is a unique event that will give you an insight into down to earth Kiwi life in a provincial sawmilling town and how an occupational role has grown into an awe-inspiring sport and art.
