Bike Wise Week is held every year in February to promote the use of bikes as alternative transport, healthy exercise and fun. In 2008 Kawerau held various well supported events.
The Bike Wise Colouring Competition was dropped off to Preschools, Kohanga's, Primary and Intermediate Schools 1 week prior to the Bikewise events commencing. Mayor Malcolm Campbell led the Mayoral Challenge starting and finishing at the Kawerau Pools, approximately 248 cyclists attended from the very young to some very distinguished senior citizens. The circuit took cyclists into the parks and reserves that Kawerau is so notable for. Up for grabs was the Mayoral bike and this was won by a young 9 year girl from Kawerau South School, Mum and sister were overjoyed also. A great turnout for the Go By Bike Day Breakfast with around 85 hungry cyclists enjoying home cooked piklets by our very own extraordinary chef jacqui complimented by Abes Real Bagels, Dole bananas, Kraft Philadelphia cream cheese Barkers jams accompanied by cereals.
Around 60 keen BMX riders attended the Kawerau BMX meet for the start of the Bikewise week. A highlight of this evening was a surprise visit from our very own BMX World Champion Sarah Walker.
